What is the Gospel?

The Greek word for gospel is "euangelion" and appears over 115 times in the New Testament.  The word means, “the good news”.  Paul, who wrote the Book of Romans, tells his readers in the first four chapters of Romans that all men are accountable to God.  Their problem is that they have sinned and rebelled against God.  The solution to this rebellion and sin is the sacrificial death and resurrection of Jesus Christ; and finally Paul tells his readers how they can be personally included in this salvation.

At the heart of the gospel message are four crucial questions involving God, man, Christ and man’s response:

1.  Who made you, and to whom are you accountable?
2. What is your problem? Why are you in trouble?
3.

What is God’s solution to your problem? How has He acted to save us from it?

4. How can I be included in God’s salvation?  What makes this good news for me personally right now?

In 1 Corinthians 15:1-5, Paul summarizes God’s solution to your problem of sin:

“Now brothers, I want to clarify for you the gospel I proclaimed to you; you received it and have taken your stand on it.  You are also saved by it, if you hold to the message I proclaimed to you – unless you believed to no purpose.  For I passed on to you as most important what I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He appeared to Cephas then to the twelve.”

Yes, you are accountable to God for living your life without God and making your life work anyway.  This is called sin.  You were born into sin or a life without God and this is your basic problem.  This problem you attempt to solve through pleasure, relationships, philosophy, religion, drugs, sexual involvement and many other means.  However, the fundamental problem is that you are separated from God.   To solve your dilemma God sent His only Son Jesus Christ to become your sin and forgive your sin so you could become His righteousness and become rightly related to God and start over with God.   If you would like to make this real to you now, today, please continue to read the following Scriptures and respond in prayer.

1)
The Fact That You Are a Sinner

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” Romans 3:23

Admit you are a sinner. Ask God right now to show you your sin and your rebellion against Him, He will show you.

2)
The Fact That You Are Now Dead in Sin

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23

This death is a spiritual death and separation from God.  If you were to die right now where would you go without God?  The Scriptures tell us you would end up in hell or eternally separated from God.

3)
Repent, Allow God to Change Your Mind About Your Sin and Turn to God

“Therefore repent and turn back, that your sins may be wiped out so that seasons of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord.”- Acts 3:19

Right now fall on your knees and confess your sin to God.  Let it all out, He understands.

4)
Know And Experience The Grace and Love of God

“For by grace you are saved through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift – not from works, so that no one can boast.”  Ephesians 2:8-9

Grace is the divine action of God upon your heart and life.  It is the love and mercy of God in action when He sent His Son to bear your sins in His own body on the cross and shed His blood for the forgiveness of your sin.

5)
Receive Christ Now by Trusting Totally In His Work On The Cross

“If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. With the heart one believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth one confesses, resulting in salvation… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”  Romans 10:9-10, 13

6)
Pray To Receive Christ Jesus Into Your Heart and Life

Jesus said, “If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it.”- John 14:14

Therefore ask Him sincerely, in your own words, to come into your heart and life or simply use the following prayer for guidance:

Lord Jesus, please come into my life and be my Savior and Lord.  I recognize my own death, burial and resurrection in Christ and want to live for You.  I confess my sin, please forgive my sins and give me the gift of eternal life. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

If you have invited Jesus Christ into your life, the Scriptures say you now have eternal life.

“God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. The one who has the Son has life." - 1 John 5:11-12

7)
You Now Have A Whole New Identity in Christ

You have whole new life and you are a new person in Christ, because the old you died in Christ by faith and you have been raised in Christ to walk in newness of life.

“Therefore we were buried with Him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too may walk in a new way of life…. For we know that our old self was crucified with Him in order that sin’s dominion over the body may be abolished, so that we may no longer be enslaved to sin, since a person who has died has been freed from sin…. So you too, consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.”  Romans 6:4, 6, 7, 11
